Making of Oni-gawara (the ogre-face ridge-end tiles) in Fukui Pref. dates back to the Meiwa era (1764-1772) in the Edo period, when a workman named Jinzo, who had been to Kyoto from Mino province to learn roof-tile making, established his own kiln in Taki village in the northern part of Fukui Pref. and began to make “Taki-gawara.”

Making of roof-tiles in this region was at its peak during the periods from Taisho through Showa. Oni-gawara is made by a specialized workman called “Oni-shi.” The clay in this region, which is resistant to cold weather, is fired in reduction firing to be made into the roof-tile material called “Bengara Clay,” which is characterized by silver-gray gloss.

Its ogre-like appearance gives an impression of dignity. As a guard of the house, Oni-gawara gives the feeling of security to the people living there. It’s the pride of the family.
