(Cool Japan Month in Singapore)

SINGAPORE (Kyodo) -- The Japanese government kicked off Thursday the first round of public-private joint projects to promote "Cool Japan" culture in Singapore with Japanese fashion brand outlets in a local department store.
The Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry said products from 15 Japanese fashion brands including Beams, an apparel brand popular among young people, will be sold at the stores collectively called Harajuku Street Style for three months from October.
It is hoped the government-backed project will provide brand owners with an opportunity to attract consumers and enhance their brand recognition in Singapore and in the broader Asian market.

Tadahiro Matsushita, senior vice minister for economy, trade and industry, told a reception the Singapore launch "is aimed at contributing to the growing Asian consumer market."
Similar projects will take place in India, China, France, Italy, the United States, Brazil and South Korea.
In March, for example, a Cool Japan festival is planned for Mumbai that will focus on Japanese luxury brands and jewelry.
Matsushita is in Singapore with representatives of several Japanese small- and medium-sized companies to introduce fashion, apparel and food.

Among the highlights of "Cool Japan Month" in Singapore are the promotion of Harajuku fashion on posh Orchard Road, Japan travel and food fairs and an anime festival.
Also Thursday, AWCG Ltd., a Japanese company representing the Harajuku brands in Japan, and Singapore fashion house 77th Street Inc. signed a memorandum to promote Japanese fashion brands in Singapore and Asia starting with a flagship store expected to open in Singapore in May.

Cool Japan aims to help the Japanese economy recover after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and also to boost the popularity of Japanese pop culture among Asian youth, among whom it has been waning amid strong Asian interest in Korean pop.
Also among upcoming projects are joint development of cartoon characters in India and promotion of Japanese products in China through television programs in cooperation with a Japanese entertainment company.
