Matsushima (松島) is a group of islands in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. There are some 260 tiny islands (shima) covered in pines (matsu) – hence the name – and is ranked as one of the Three Views of Japan.
There are four well-known spots to view the Matsushima, known as the Magnificent View (壮観 sokan), Beautiful View (麗観 reikan), Enchanting View (幽観 yukan), and Grand View (偉観 ikan).

Despite the proximity of Matsushima to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the town was protected from the extreme tsunami by the islands in the Bay. However, many of the buildings sustained structural damage after the earthquake, including the Zuigan-ji Zen Buddhist Temple. In addition, due to it's proximity on the water many homes and business were severely damaged or destroyed by the 3 meter tsunami. Six (6) persons were also confirmed killed.

A Matsushima Relief Fund (501(c)3) was set up by the family of Kathleen Paul, an American who was visiting Matsushima when the earthquake/tsunami struck. Matsushima is considered one of Japan's Three Great Views. It is an important destination for many tourists, both Japanese and International. Because many of towns near Matsushima were completed destroyed by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, it is important to get Matsushima repaired and back on its feet in order to inspire and bring hope to those towns that cannot rebuild. All funds from the Matsushima Relief Fund are used for rebuilding efforts. 100% of the funds collected are sent to the Matsushima Rebuilding fund. A link to the site is below. It includes relief effort updates, photos and a story written by Kathleen describing the earthquake/tsunami of March 11, 2011 as witnessed in Matsushima.
