HAYAKAWA, Yamanashi Prefecture--This year was supposed to be a big year for business at a historic hotel that dates back to the 8th century.
Just in February the hotel, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Hayakawa, Yamanashi Prefecture--established in 705--was certified as the world's oldest operating inn by Guinness World Records. The innkeeper expected, not unreasonably, that the recognition would lead to a rise in guests.

However, the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, changed everything. While more people overseas inquired about the hotel after Guinness' recognition, cancellations increased and domestic bookings fell.
However, President Yuji Fukazawa is not deterred. "I believe a hotel can survive if it has something genuine," he says. "We will continue to offer our brand of hospitality and make the most of the recognition offered by Guinness."

Fukazawa also hopes to pick up another laurel from Guinness--as the hot spring with the largest volume of water produced per minute.
The company dug a hot spring 888 meters underground in 2005. It produces 1,630 liters of water at a temperature at 52 degrees every minute.

Keiunkan is said to have been established by Fujiwara Mahito, son of Fujiwara Kamatari, who was a close aide to Emperor Tenji (626-671).
The company applied for recognition with Guinness World Records in late December last year in the category of the world's oldest hotel and inn. It was approved in mid-February. The previous oldest was Hoshi hotel in Awazu Onsen in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, which dates back to 718.
Fukazawa, the 52nd operator of the hotel, says, "It is an honorable event. We want to continue to preserve Japanese culture as a purely Japanese hotel."
