Warmer weather relieves misery of Japan tsunami victims

SENDAI - A WARM front in north-east Japan has brought some respite to hundreds of thousands of homeless tsunami victims after days of freezing temperatures carpeted the region in snow and ice.
Although still bitterly cold at night, the mercury climbed to 10 deg C on Saturday in coastal Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, which bore the brunt of the giant wave triggered by a huge earthquake on March 11.
We should not forget and also we should recoginze the fear of Tsunami or tidal wave which hit Tohoku Region of Northeastern Japan.

Japan earthquake: Moment tsunami hit Miyako City

(More footage has emerged of the tsunami reaching the port town of Miyako City
in Iwate Prefecture, destroying everything in its path.)

The misery of the survivors - more than half a million of whom remain in evacuation shelters with no power and scant fuel, food and water - had been compounded by a severe cold snap on Wednesday that lasted for three days.

The freezing weather was blamed for the deaths of a number of elderly, already weakened survivors, who had suffered most from the lack of power and heating in the ill-equipped shelters.

Japan's weather agency advised that the warmer weather might only be temporary, with cold rain or snow forecast to return to Iwate on Sunday.

Tsukasa Ito at the Sendai District Meteorological Observatory in Miyagi said the agency had also issued a warning for strong coastal winds that could stir up dust storms on the drying mud flats left behind by the tsunami. -- AFP
