Sapporo's winter wonderland

Hot nights in Tokyo, hot baths in Tanabe
Daily Mail - Jan 28, 2011

My idea of a perfect holiday had been to go somewhere rural, spiritual and remote. A real antidote to city life. My husband, Steve, had different ideas. He wanted bars, nightlife, jazz clubs, restaurants and technology. The thing we did agree on was that we wanted to visit Japan. As we spoke about it - me wistfully of cherry blossom and the snow-capped peaks of Mount Fuji, he of karaoke bars and Fujifilm - a win/win compromise emerged. So we split our fortnight holiday down the middle: his - two cities; hers - walking the ancient pilgrimage trails in the Kii mountains. (Daily Mail)

Winter has been a treacherous affair overseas recently. The use of terms such as "snowmageddon" and "snowpocalypse" conjure up images of the worst the season has to offer. But while many in the West suffer from the stresses of snow, the city of Sapporo will revel in it. The Sapporo Snow Festival is now in its 62nd year. With almost 250 snow and ice sculptures on show, and a consistent annual visitor count topping 2 million people, it is certainly a festival of international caliber. The massive, sprawling event will take place from Feb. 7-13 and will once again be centered around Odori Park and the Sapporo Tsudome in Hokkaido's capital city. (Japan Times)

JAL tops on-time arrival list of 33 major airlines
AP - Jan 26, 2011

Japan Airlines topped the on-time arrival list for the world's 33 major airlines in 2010, ranking first for the second straight year, the airline said Wednesday, quoting a recently released report from U.S. information services firm Conducive Technology Corp. The survey found 89.90 percent of JAL flights arrived no more than 15 minutes later than scheduled during the year, according to the airline, which is currently undergoing a court-supervised rehabilitation process. Japan sees record foreign visitors in 2010
Straits Times - Jan 26, 2011

Japan welcomed a record 8.61 million foreign visitors last year, a 26.8 per cent increase on 2009, a tourist body said on Wednesday, despite the growing strength of the yen. At the same time, the increased purchasing power of the currency helped register the first increase for four years in the number of Japanese tourists going abroad. The rise in visitors to the country was mainly due to a recovery in the global economy and the full opening of Tokyo's Haneda airport to international flights last October, the Japan National Tourist Organisation said. Japan: Industrial chic

Factory night view cruise participants in the Keihin industrial zone in Tokyo, Japan, indulge in some industrial light and magic.

Here's an off-the-beaten-track idea that's luring people away from the Tokyo metropolis: the factory night view cruise. The brainchild of Kawasaki tourism officials, twice-monthly factory cruises that started this month visit the city's Keihin industrial zone as a sightseeing attraction. With furnaces billowing white smoke, elaborate systems of pipes, spiralling staircases and the accompanying light and sound show, the factories evoke scenes from science fiction movies. Roads less traveled on Okinawa Island

(Nice'n'easy: Pacific rollers break on the coral off a beach in northern Okinawa's Yanbaru district.)

We've been traveling north from Naha on Okinawa's eponymous main island for almost an hour, searching out some of the lesser-known local hotspots. Most of the island's visitors stick to the south, with its abundance of cultural theme parks, historical sites and shopping opportunities. Being island residents, however, Andria and I have already ticked off the typical tourist destinations and, as a mini-typhoon dumps rain on the southern portion of our adopted home, we're finally taking the time to properly explore the island's less-populated northerly reaches. Japan: Some like it raw
tribune.com.pk - Jan 19, 2011

(Japan is about a whole lot more than snazzy electronics.)

Before I went to Japan, I never imagined myself eating live shell fish, raw oysters and octopus. I have visited so many Asian countries, but somehow never worked Japan into my travel plans. I suppose it is a country that Pakistanis associate with durable cars, electronic wonders, and little else. If we stretch our minds a bit, stereotypical Japanese kimonos or fans might be added to the list. Recently, I was fortunate enough to visit Japan and live for several weeks in the midst of its unique mix of ultramodernity and ancient ways, including the most complicated hi tech toilets I've ever encountered. Ice dome accommodates guests in Hokkaido resort
AP - Jan 17, 2011

A hotel room made of ice, including a bed, table and other furniture also made of ice, began accepting guests over the weekend at a resort in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The "ice hotel" facility, housed inside a dome made of ice at the Alpha Resort Tomamu in the village of Shimukappu, accepts one pair or group per day during a month-long operation period through Feb. 15. The winter temperature is as low as minus 18 C in the village and guests are supposed to sleep in sleeping bags inside the ice hotel room where the temperature is around minus 3 C. (AP)
