"O-fune Hoko" Ready to Revive

"Yuino-no-gi" of the Gion Festival Naginata Hoko float, based at Shijo-dori Karasuma Higashi-iru, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, which is a ceremony of adoption to welcome this year's "Chigo," or sacred child, into the town, was held at the house of 10-year-old Chigo Mineyuki Tokuriki in Higashiyama Ward on June 19.

On June 12, it was revealed that "O-fune Hoko" float was making arrangements to rejoin the Gion Festival's "Yamahoko Junko" procession. Until the Edo Period, the float occupied the last position of the procession; however, it was burnt down in a great fire at the end of the Edo Period and became a dormant float.

Ikuo Hirayama's Works in Gion Festival

On June 12, the preservation group for the Gion Festival float Moso Yama, of Karasuma-dori Shijo-agaru, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, exhibited the float's two new decorative side covers, which are each 1.5 meters long and 2.7 meters wide. Their design is based on "Sabaku Rakuda Ko," or camel trip in the desert, painted by Ikuo Hirayama, a Japanese-style painter, who passed away last year.
