THERE'S a certain sound that let's you know summer is really here: the tinkling of dozens of furin glass wind chimes brought into earshot on the shoulder of the traveling seller.
In Tokyo's Ginza district, and more recently Roppongi, that man has been Akira Nakayama.

At 66, he's one of Tokyo's last peripatetic chime peddlers, having been in business for 36 years. Over the decades, he's sold chimes in the thousands and developed a profile of his customers. ...

CANNES, France--Takeshi Kitano's latest film, "Outrage," a violent tale of a yakuza gang power struggle, was screened in competition for the Palme d'Or prize at the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival here Monday.

OSAKA--You wouldn't think a vacated office building would be the ideal lodging for a foreign tourist hoping to take in the charms of Japanese hospitality.

Yet that seems to be the case in this commercial capital, where an architect has turned a four-decade-old office/dormitory into a chic Japanese-style hostel.

Apparel maker Onward Kashiyama Co. on Tuesday recreated one of impressionist Vincent van Gogh's self-portraits, using 2,070 of the company's polo shirts for the task.

The shirts were specially produced for the project over the Golden Week holidays. They come in 24 colors, including 12 bluish hues, which van Gogh favored.
The creation was inspired by the continued popularity of impressionist art exhibitions in Japan. ...

Actress Misako Watanabe took her final bow Sunday for the solo stage play, "Kesho" (Makeup), after its 648th performance, thanking her "many audiences and their applause for helping 'Kesho' survive for 28 years."

"I am alone on the stage, but it is members of the audience who always protect and help me," 77-year-old Watanabe said as she took a curtain call after the final performance at the Za-Koenji theater in Tokyo's Suginami Ward.

"Kesho" was written by playwright Hisashi Inoue, who died of cancer in April. He was 75. ...
