KYOTO--A new iPhone application allows users to create sansuiga, or traditional Oriental ink paintings that depict landscapes.

The Sansui Ink Painting software, developed by Necrosoft Games LLC of the United States, is based on ideas from Naoko Tosa, a professor at Kyoto University's Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies. It sells for 350 yen ($3.76).

Users can create their own sansuiga by selecting from about 80 icon items in 10 categories, such as rocks, trees, birds and bridges. ...

In 1951, when "Rashomon" won the Golden Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival, its director, Akira Kurosawa, was dangling a fishing line in the waters of the Tamagawa river near his Tokyo home.

Vanilla, strawberry and other assorted flavors move over.

A Tokyo-based soy sauce brewer has come up with a unique combination for ice cream, following up on its own 2008 soy sauce-flavored creation.

A 120-milliliter tub of Ponzu Aisu ice cream, which contains ponzu--a tart mixture of citrus juice, vinegar and soy sauce--costs 300 yen ($3.20) at Oka Naozaburo Shoten in Machida and through its website. The new frozen treat looks brownish white and, like ponzu, has a slight citrus flavor. ...
