A French friend who is a longtime resident of Japan is, like me, a smoker. Out of consideration for her children, she doesn't smoke inside the house. When she has time, she goes outside to puff to her heart's content. When she does, she always carries a portable ashtray.
"It started when I received one on the street as a giveaway. Now, it has become indispensable. In France, I used to toss cigarette butts on the street and stamp on them. Now, looking back, I feel ashamed," she said. ...
Lifelike robot not just a pretty face

OSAKA--The inventors of a robot capable of mimicking human movements and facial expressions believe it is so realistic that it can be used to provide counseling to human patients.
The robot, called "Geminoid F," is modeled after a woman in her late 20s and operated by remote control. It can copy a wide range of expressions, including blinking, frowning and smiling. A speaker in the body can project a human voice.
Hiroshi Ishiguro, the professor at Osaka University who led the development team, told a press conference on Saturday that he saw the robot as more than an expensive toy. "It could be used for remote medical care, such as counseling," he said. ...

Asian consumers are warming up to Japan's kawaii cute fashion trend, a survey on consumption in four Asian cities by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry showed.
The survey covered 250 men and women in their 20s and 30s living in Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and Mumbai from December to mid-February.
The survey was aimed at discovering consumers' tastes and orientations to assist Japanese companies trying to strengthen their presence is Asia. It revealed that 60 percent of respondents "spend money on fashion." ...
