ETIENNE'S COOL JAPAN: Terminals make ticket purchases much easier

(A terminal inside a convenience store (ETIENNE BARRAL))

Living in Tokyo, I find multimedia terminals at convenience stores an indispensable part of my everyday life.

In addition to reserving and buying tickets to concerts and other events, I use them frequently to pay my prepaid cellphone bills, arrange home delivery services and make bookings for leisure facilities.

The terminals help me save time because convenience stores can be found in practically any Tokyo neighborhood.

While the machines may stop service for a short time, since they are operational almost around the clock, I can use them any time that suits me.

Since the terminals allow customers to obtain tickets right away, they are also convenient for foreign tourists. (It is particularly a pain for foreigners who do not know their way around in Tokyo to have to go to concert halls or theaters in advance and line up for tickets.)

Since automatic teller machines in Seven-Eleven convenience stores can now be used to make withdrawals with overseas credit cards, they have also come to be known among tourists by word of mouth and through guidebooks.

I feel that convenience stores are offering more services that are also foreigner-friendly.

But unless all terminals have displays that also show instructions in foreign languages, only people who can understand Japanese can use them.

Why not introduce more services designed for foreigners?

One idea is to allow users to draw tourist information in such languages as English and Chinese.

If the machines can be used to send parcels to overseas destinations, tourists who buy souvenirs in Japan can have them delivered to their homes without having to carry them home.

Since Japan is welcoming a growing number of foreign tourists, it would not be a bad idea to offer services to make their stays more convenient and enjoyable.
