One of the very first things I learned in Japan is the culture of gift-giving especially the one called 'o-miyage'. In the Philippines we call it 'pasalubong'. In Japan, whenever anybody goes somewhere, he/she is culturally 'obliged' to bring home any kind of souvenir from his travel (usually local delicacies) to give to friends and family. This tradition is so popular that these kinds of goods are sold all over the tourist spots, food shops and even within train stations in case you missed them on your way back.

I think it's cool not only because you receive presents(!) but also because this culture strengthens relationships just by the mere thoughtfulness that the we show to each other. It's a lot of fun receiving different omiyages, but it's no joke when you're doing the traveling and packing all those sweets, drinks, cookies and mochi's in your luggage! I should know but still, I think omiyages are just one of the many cool things I like in Japan!
