Asahidake Onsen is a small hot spring resort at the foot of Hokkaido's highest mountain, Mount Asahidake (2290 meters), and one of the most pleasant bases for exploring Daisetsuzan National Park.
The small village consists of only about a dozen buildings, wooden lodges, a beautiful youth hostel and two or three large hotels. Shopping and dining opportunities are limited to the hotels and the ropeway station. For weather forecasts, maps and other tourist information, head to the visitor center.

World's oldest hotel struggles to attract domestic guests

HAYAKAWA, Yamanashi Prefecture--This year was supposed to be a big year for business at a historic hotel that dates back to the 8th century.
Just in February the hotel, Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Hayakawa, Yamanashi Prefecture--established in 705--was certified as the world's oldest operating inn by Guinness World Records. The innkeeper expected, not unreasonably, that the recognition would lead to a rise in guests.

Designated as a "quasi national park" and located only twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, Onuma Park (Onuma Koen) is known for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic dormant volcano, Mount Komagatake.
Onuma Park can be easily visited in either a day trip from Hakodate or on a stop over on a journey between Hakodate and Sapporo, since most limited express trains between the two cities stop at Onuma Koen Station, the central railway station.

Shinagawa and Ota are two wards bordering on Tokyo Bay that aren't known for being huge tourist spots but hold two major travel hubs: Haneda Airport, recently reopened to regular international flights, and Shinagawa Station, which has connections to a number of major train lines. Tourism associations in these two wards are hoping to leverage their travel hubs in the future by offering mini-tours for international visitors passing through the area. (Mainichi)
