Cool Japan Guide / US tsunami wreck sightseers mull Japan 'tragedy'

Sightseers flocking to see a tsunami-wrecked dock washed up on a US beach were urged Friday to reflect on the "tragedy" of last year's killer quake and tidal wave in Japan.
Local authorities in Oregon, where the 66-foot (20-meter) floating dock made landfall Tuesday after a 5,500 mile, 15-month trip across the Pacific, said they had not yet decided how to dispose of it.

Cool Japan / Search goes on for thousands of Japan's tsunami missing

http://msnbcmedia2.msn.com/j/MSNBC/Components/Slideshows/_production/ss-Japan-Quake-tabbed/week4/ss-110401-japanQuake-jc-03.grid-8x2.jpg

Somewhere under these unforgiving grey waters lie hundreds, perhaps thousands of bodies; the unfound, unclaimed dead of one of the country's worst ever
disasters.
Even though the hunt on these sullen seas goes on every day, Yoshifumi Suzuki says none of his coastguard colleagues has seen a single corpse since the partial remains of a man were untangled from a fishing net in November.
But they are not prepared to give up.
"If we don't do this, nobody will," Suzuki said.
"We want to continue the search until we find the very last one. I want to return people to their families not because it is my official duty, but because it is my duty as a human being."

KAMAISHI, Iwate Prefecture--When Maestro Yutaka Sado assembled a "Superkids Orchestra" to pay homage to victims of the March 11 disaster, he chose a spot much beloved by residents of this quake-ravaged area: a pine forest on Nehama Beach.
This well-known scenic spot was transformed by the March 11 disaster. The beach is strewn with debris from the tsunami, and many trees were uprooted.
"I want to perform music that mourns the loss of life and helps people in their prayers for the recovery of affected areas," Sado, 50, said before the Aug. 9 event.

Despite the proximity of Matsushima to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the town was protected from the extreme tsunami by the islands in the Bay. However, many of the buildings sustained structural damage after the earthquake, including the Zuigan-ji Zen Buddhist Temple. In addition, due to it's proximity on the water many homes and business were severely damaged or destroyed by the 3 meter tsunami. Six (6) persons were also confirmed killed.

Fukushima plant was scary 32 years ago, says manga author

http://www.fesh.jp/img/utterer/1476_1_org.jpg
(Shigeru Mizuki)

Shigeru Mizuki, a manga author known for works featuring "yokai" ghouls and hobgoblins, seems to have had a premonition about the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant as far back as 1979.
His striking illustrations of life inside the facility, where workers are struggling to contain leakage of radioactive material caused by meltdowns following the March 11 earthquake, first appeared 32 years ago in Asahi Graph, a pictorial magazine which has since been discontinued. The illustrations vividly depicted severe working conditions faced by front-line plant workers as well as shoddy rules on safety management.

Here is the reality and recovery of Tohoku, three months after. I think the pictures are quite remarkable, despite still being far away from a full recovery. I'm so proud to live in Japan after seeing how everything was handled with such dignity and strength.

Give power for earlier recovery from the disaster

(‘Hotate-ema’ at the lovely railway station ‘Koishihama’)

‘Hotate-ema’ or small shells of scallop on which worshippers write their prayers or wishes for earlier recovery from the disaster, has been increasing in number at Koishihama Station on the Minami-rias Line of Sanriku Railway. The station has changed its name from ‘小石浜 or pebbly beach’ to ‘恋し浜 or lovely beach’ after top-brand scallops in Yoshihama town in 2009.

Sake brewers from Tohoku vow to rise again from the ashes

What did the principal tell you about bringing booze to school? In the case of sake from Japan's northern Tohoku region, however, there's room for leeway.
The sake, brought from 30 breweries in Aomori, Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures -- which together make up the devastated Tohoku region -- drew crowds to 3331 Arts Chiyoda, a former elementary school in Tokyo's Akihabara area turned into art studios and design offices.

Already hurting, Tohoku's traditional crafts face uncertain future after March 11 disaster

For centuries, the Tohoku region has supported a wealth of artisans working with natural materials, but a recent dearth of young people willing to take up the traditions has threatened the crafts' survival.
The March 11 disaster may have been the final nail in the coffin.
However, the artisans are refusing to give up despite the damage and death from the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, as well as declining sales amid radiation fears.

2011 Tohoku District Tsunami (津波)

Tsunami at Minami Souma on 3.11, 2011【東北地方太平洋沖地震】南相馬市 津波映像

The earthquake which was caused by 5 to 8 meters upthrust on 180-km wide seabed at 60 km offshore from the east coast of Tohoku resulted in a major tsunami which brought destruction along the Pacific coastline of Japan's northern islands and resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and devastated entire towns. The tsunami propagated across the Pacific, and warnings were issued and evacuations carried out. In many countries bordering the Pacific, including the entire Pacific coast of North and South America from Alaska to Chile however, while the tsunami was felt in many of these places, it caused only relatively minor effects.

‘I won’t leave the town where I was born’

An old lady in Ofunato has experienced tsunami three times

The home of Ms. Yasuko Sasaki (86), located in Sakari town, was flooded in the tsunami caused by East Japan Earthquake. She has been suffered a great deal of damages from the three great tsunamis in her life. All three tsunamis caused by the 1933 Sanriku earthquake (昭和三陸地震,), the 1960 Great Chilean earthquake(チリ地震津波), and this time attacked her.

2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake, officially named the Great East Japan Earthquake, was a magnitude 9.0 (Mw) undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) on Friday, 11 March 2011, with the epicenter approximately 72 km (45 mi) east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku and the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 32 km (20 mi).
It was the most powerful known earthquake to have hit Japan, and one of the five most powerful earthquakes in the world overall since modern record-keeping began in 1900. The earthquake triggered extremely destructive tsunami waves of up to 38 meters (124 ft) that struck Japan, in some cases traveling up to 10 km (6 mi) inland.

I'm sure it's useful for us to study Earthquake this time by checking photos before and/or after quake.
